CVE-2026-1678
dns: memory‑safety issue in the DNS name parser
Description

dns_unpack_name() caches the buffer tailroom once and reuses it while appending DNS labels. As the buffer grows, the cached size becomes incorrect, and the final null terminator can be written past the buffer. With assertions disabled (default), a malicious DNS response can trigger an out-of-bounds write when CONFIG_DNS_RESOLVER is enabled.

CVSS Scores
The Common Vulnerability Scoring System is a standardized framework for assessing the severity of vulnerabilities in software and systems. We collect and displays CVSS scores from various sources for each CVE.
Score Version Severity Vector Exploitability Score Impact Score Source

CVSS 3.1 CRITICAL [email protected]
Solution
Fix an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in dns_unpack_name() by correcting buffer size calculations.
  • Update the dns_unpack_name() function to correctly manage buffer tailroom.
  • Ensure DNS label appending logic accounts for buffer growth accurately.
  • Test thoroughly with various DNS response sizes.
  • Enable assertions in debug builds for early detection.
